Getting Started with ABA Therapy: A Guide for Parents and Caregivers
ABA is an evidence-based treatment shown to be very effective in helping learn new skills. The team at Lamplight is committed to helping our learners make as much progress on their journeys. The path looks different for each learner, but our team will be there to help each learner on his or her path. Coping with the ASD diagnosis of a loved one can be at times confusing and overwhelming. This resource is designed to help answer questions and light the way as you begin your ABA journey. This resource shares information about understanding the ASD diagnosis and the steps to help set your loved one up for success with ABA!
Every learner’s ABA journey begins with understanding autism and what ABA therapy is:
• Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects communication, social interactions, and behavior. The benefits of early intervention are critical in helping young learners with this diagnosis.
• Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) helps learners build skills and reduce challenging behaviors through individualized strategies.
Reach out to us at 413-526-7222 (413-LAMPABA), email us at admin@lamplightbehavior.com, or fill out our online form.
Our team will verify your insurance and explain costs upfront!
We will work with you to schedule an initial intake. Here we will:
• Answer questions you have about us and our services
• Discuss the learner’s strengths, challenges, and brief history
• Review medical records and prior evaluation information
Our assessment combines caregiver insight with an in-person assessment with your child to identify areas of focus.
After completing the assessment, your BCBA will discuss the assessment results and recommendations for service with you. This helps make sure you know the areas of focus and are part of treatment from the start of services.
Once caregiver(s) agree with the areas of focus and hours, we can write the treatment plan to submit to insurance. This also helps make sure there are no areas of concern we have missed.
We will remain in contact to help answer questions and support you while awaiting insurance approval to formally start services.
When services start, you will be introduced to the team working with your child. Your BCBA will be present for these first sessions and will continue to supervise progress on an ongoing basis.
Your BCBA will reach out to you at the start of services to schedule an initial caregiver guidance meeting with you, based on availability.
Sessions will continue as scheduled, with daily debriefing and ongoing caregiver meetings to keep you informed of your child’s progress and identify areas of focus important to you.
Goals will be updated and added as your child makes progress, with you informed of these updates every step along the way.
We encourage questions and feedback and will continue to work with you and other providers to best help your child make progress.
Every few months we will conduct a formal reassessment for insurance. We will provide you the results of that reassessment along with our recommendations to make sure you are a part of the process.
As your child gains more skills or you or their needs change, we will prepare for eventual fading of services.
We will discuss what a fade from services looks like and work with you in developing a formal plan.
As services fade, we will continue to monitor progress to make sure your child is continuing to make progress and thrive.
Even after your child ends their time at Lamplight, we are always a call away to help however we can. Our goal is to see your child best succeed!
